Pumps In The Process Industry

Diaphragm Pumps, Peristaltic Pumps or Positive Displacement Pumps
A diaphragm pump is a type of positive displacement pump that uses a combination of reciprocating actions of the diaphragm to move the fluid. Usually, the pump is driven by compressed air. The pump chambers trap a fixed volume of the fluid and then forces it into a discharge pipe. Positive Displacement Pumps are widely used in the Water Treatment, Oil and Gas, Chemical, Pharmaceuticals, Food and Beverages, Pulp and Paper, Agriculture, and Textile industries. Diaphragm pumps can be broadly classified into air-operated diaphragm pumps, mechanical pumps, and hydraulic pumps. Estimates show that the Global Diaphragm Pump market will grow at a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.46 percent over the period 2014-2019.

Rotary Pumps
Pumps are used in the circulation of fluids and slurries by consuming energy to facilitate the mechanical operations. The rotary pump belongs to the positive displacement pump family. In rotary pumps, the pumping action takes place as a result of rotary motion. The liquid to be displaced moves in a circumferential pattern inside the pump. Main components of a rotary pump are: pumping chamber, casing, end plates, rotating assembly, seal chamber, seal, and relief valves. It is forecasted that the global rotary pump market will grow at a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.29% over the period 2014-2019.

Global Screw Pumps Market
Screw pumps play an essential role in a wide range of applications such as the sewage, water and wastewater treatment, food and beverage, oil extraction, hydraulic fracturing, and chemical industries. The global screw pumps market is projected to grow significantly, posting a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 7%, which is triggered by rapid urbanization and industrialization (India, China etc.). Moreover, increase in urbanization has resulted in rising demand for improved infrastructure and water and wastewater treatment plants, thus expediting the demand for screw pumps.

Estimates show that the global pumps market will grow steadily at a Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5% over period 2014-2019. Increased investment in water and wastewater recycling plants are the main contributing factors to this growth. The water and wastewater industry is growing so fast due to a rise in population, urbanization, and manufacturing activities. Industries such as power, pharmaceuticals, and food and beverage are heavily water-reliant and will have a significant impact on the global demand for water. The production increase in these manufacturing industries makes water conservation and adherence to stringent environmental guidelines paramount. Also, governments of developing countries are also investing heavily in the wastewater industry for wastewater treatment, which is benefitting market growth.

Growing application of 3-D printing technology is a significant trend in the market. The new field of 3-D printing technology has seen significant advances in the last decade with fabrication techniques becoming less expensive and more accessible thanks to its use. Pump manufacturers have combined 3-D printing technology with modeling software. The twin fields of 3-D and computer modeling technologies have opened a whole new frontier in the pump design, repair, and replacement. This trend will continue to impact the cost of manufacturing pumps and boost its demand until 2020. Pump and valve vendors can create significant further growth by expanding their product lines by offering the "complete package" eg Pumps and Valves since they are so closely related anyway. Complete pump & valve packages, as connected units, skid mounted or as parts of complex installation does not only add significantly to sales volume, and to differentiation but also makes the vendor being recognized as the "specialist" in its field. Adding services like (onsite) repair, spare parts, re-manufacture, and design will further add to the company's recognized supplier's position in the marketplace.

“Pumps that are not efficient enough will either be removed from the market or will require redesign. Some estimates put this at up to 20% of the pumps on the market today.”
